Greg’s Daughter’s Fundrasing Program

Sensei Greg Vahanian Support

Gregory Vahanian is one of my first black belt students who followed me from NY to Colorado and was the head instructor at CU Boulder when he went to college there. On Monday, August 24th, 2009, the doctors diagnosed his 2-year-old daughter, Isabella, with leukemia. She has begun chemotherapy treatment and will require in-hospital care for close to a year. Greg and his wife Wendy have been at Isabella’s side 24 hours a day 7 days a week each taking 12 hour shifts. Insurance will not cover everything so I wanted to post this to help raise money for Greg and Wendy in this challenging time they are having. Whether or not you are able to offer financial assistance, I would greatly appreciate your keeping Isabella, big sister, Gabriela, Wendy and Gregory in your loving prayers. If you’d like to have a visual journal and updates on Isabella, please add Gregory Vahanian as a friend in FACEBOOK. (When doing so, please “add a message” mentioning my name, Kancho Ninomiya)

Checks can be made out to:

Joko Ninomiya and sent to

Denver, CO 80220.

Please donate your valuable assistance by January 1, 2010

Seo Sensei’s visit to Butokuden Dojo

BUTOKUDEN Kendo Members:

Subject: Seo Sensei’s (Kendo 8 Dan) visit
Date: December 10
Time: 7:00 – 9:00 PM

From Small

Seo Sensei (Executive Vice President of Korean Kumdo Federation for Social Members
) will be visiting our Dojo on December 10. We will have an open practice starting at 7PM. Thanks to Kim sensei, we were able to arrange Seo Sensei’s visit to our Dojo, during his busy schedule here in the USA.

I have known Seo Sensei from a long time ago, and he took very good care of me when I went to Korea for Kendo training back in 2001. He was also one of the referees who refereed my match at the 11WKC in 2000 (Semi Finals, Taisho match Canada x Japan). You can watch that match on Youtube. Keep your calendar open. It will be a great opportunity to practice with a high ranking sensei from Korea.

2009 Fall SCKO Dan/Kyu Exam Sign up Sheet

BUTOKUDEN Kendo Members:

I am trying to automate the process as much as I can, in order to minimize everyone’s work, so I would appreciate if you could fill out this form (I apologize for the double entry for people that have already sent me the information, but please re-enter.) It will automatically update my database. This promotion exam is for people eligible to apply for 6 Kyu and up, up to 4 Dan. Our Dojo minimum requirement is to have been practicing Kendo with Bogu for the last 3 months. The age requirements and Kata requirements are also listed in this link.

For people trying for 1 Kyu and up, I encourage you to start mastering the Kendo Kata from now. There is no point of just doing the Kata for exam purpose only. Kata incorporates all the basic movements in Kendo, and by mastering the Kendo Kata, your Kendo techniques will improve. If you have any questions about the Kata, please ask the Senseis and Senpais at the Dojo.
